Beyond The Lights

“I See You” … Beyond The Lights

Monday, February 16, 2015

Last week, during the Pan African Film Festival, I had the pleasure of attending a screening of Beyond the Lights written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.  I didn’t catch it in theaters the first time so I am happy I got to see it on the big screen before the DVD release.  For those not familiar, Gina Prince-Bythewood wrote and directed Love and Basketball, one of my favorites. Beyond The Lights is another love story set under the scrutiny of the public eye. This time around instead of the sports world the prying eyes are that of the music business and fans.  Noni Jean played by Gugu...

Gardening Ain’t Easy

Monday, August 4, 2014

I did a lot of things when I was a kid however; playing in dirt was not one of them. With that being said gardening and or creating an outdoor space has never been my thing until now. My current place has an outdoor space that could be glorious with a little love poured into it.  On my first day of transforming my bleak patio into a shabby chic outdoor oasis I learned my quick trip to the local hardware store was not going to do the trick. 1. My flooring idea is not going to fly- Ready to put down flooring that is claims to transform any deck, I found out I needed to clean the area first....

Last fall I did my first half Ironman triathlon, Augusta 70.3. Sticking to the training schedule for the late September race was fairly easy. I trained with a triathlon team of age groupers who were all doing the same race. We worked with four coaches. The training meetups were close to my house. My day’s workout was sent directly to me via the Training Peaks program. Mid-August I am doing another 70.3 in Lake Stevens. Preparing for this race has been hard. Getting on track with training has been sporadic. I recently relocated to the West Coast so this year I am pretty much training myself....

Adding Another Layer To My Wardrobe

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

In the latter part of 2013 I made a conscious effort to make changes in my life. Some of those changes were minor, like clean out my closets and cupboards. Others changes were major such as move across the country to a new city. Moving is both stressful and refreshing. It allows one to be excited by newness and a little stressed by letting go of the familiar. Letting go of the familiar also has its pluses and minuses for me, and I am focusing on the positive. My move has brought me a whole new climate and new fashion choices. South Florida is hot and 110% humidity. Southern California has hot,...

Winners All Around

Saturday, November 9, 2013

“How sweet the sound,” and an iconic line from the song Amazing Grace.  It can be said that the line is meant to bring comfort, clarity, peace and even protection. At the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, “how sweet the sound,’ brought diversity, style, excitement, competition and talent. Lots of talent. Verizon Wireless once again sponsored the How Sweet The Sound choir competition. In its 6th year choirs from New Orleans, Dallas, Baltimore, New York City, Detroit and Atlanta all represented different regions of the country. Each choir got to the finale after a year long fight in the regional...

Growing Up Unscented

unscented bottles

Growing Up Unscented By Rashida Bartley In my mom’s house perfumed items were outlawed. She said the fragrances bothered her. How the scented items agitated her I don’t know. She didn’t have allergies or at least she didn’t have allergies that were apparent to me. To this day, I still don’t I believe her explanation. In her closet she always had a secret stash of eau de toilettes from Estée Lauder and Lancôme. It wasn’t so much that I wanted to smell fragrant- it... Read More

Yoga yields revelation on health and weight loss.

Rashida Bartley’s Foray into yoga yields revelation on health and weight loss. By Rashida Bartley Call it insane, an act of vanity or need to do something social not involving social media, but I decided to do a yoga challenge. I joined a Bikram yoga studio, I told myself and Facebook friends I would go to class every day for 30 days. Most people refer to Bikram as “hot yoga,” since the practice is done in a room with the temperature hovering around 105 degrees.... Read More

Raw Food Revelations

My 2012 raw food revolution was a bust in the sense that I didn’t blog much about the experience and I did not go completely raw by the end of the year. What I did realize was the following: 1. I like hot food. Not only do I like hot food, I like eating out […]
